Thank You for Bushfire Assistance
The Lost Dogs' Home would like to sincerely thank members of the public who continue to give generously to help the Home provide assistance for pets affected by the bushfires. The response has been overwhelming and very heartwarming for the staff working long hours on the Home’s bushfire response.
Staff from The Lost Dogs' Home have attended several community meetings and family days to find out how the Home can be of assistance. At Whittlesea Family Day, fifteen pets were microchipped and their owner’s contact details were updated to reflect their new living arrangements and phone numbers. Twenty-five pets were given ID tags at Healesville and sixty-two at Longwarry. The Lost Dogs' Home has also delivered pet food, bowls, leads, collars and vet supplies to the Clonbinane area as well as several Relief Centres.
The Home is still offering free pet ID tags and microchipping services for the domestic animals living in fire-prone regions of Victoria and Tasmania. The Home can easily set-up mobile stations to issue microchips and identification tags on the spot. The Home believes a proactive approach to pet identification is needed.
“The Lost Dogs' Home has found that for pet owners who have evacuated from the bushfire areas that their pet identification may be useless. It was brought home to me personally when I rang a friend from Chum Creek (near Healesville) last Saturday. She had evacuated with her three kids, one dog and three cats to Lilydale. One of the cats unfortunately went missing. The ID was linked back to her home address and home phone number. There was no power so the answering machine was not working. There was no one living at the home so the phone was not being answered. We are therefore now emphasising the need for a second contact name and phone number linked with the pet ID,” said Dr Graeme Smith, Managing Director of The Lost Dogs' Home.
The Lost Dogs' Home operates the National Pet Register and can easily set-up mobile tagging and microchipping services. Interested parties should call the National Pet Register on 1300 734 738 to arrange a tagging station in their area.
As well as providing identification services, The Lost Dogs' Home is offering free boarding, veterinary care, medicines, portable cages, fostering, pet food, bowls, leads, collars and blankets. Our Ambulance Fleet is also ready to serve when required.
