Volunteering

We do not have many volunteering opportunities working directly with the animals, primarily for health and safety reasons. The work with the animals is generally undertaken by our trained, paid and caring staff.

However, we do welcome the extra help of volunteers from time to time, mainly in administration. To volunteer at the Home you have to be between 16 years and 70 years old.

Due to an overwhelming number of requests all volunteer opportunities at the Home are filled. When we are able to offer volunteer work again we will advertise on our website. We appreciate your patience.

How you can help

Administration
These administration tasks are often routine and can include;

  • Opening mail
  • Filing
  • Stuffing envelopes
  • Data entry

Unfortunately, this work does not involve handling and socialising with the animals. However, by helping us out in the office, you are also assisting us to continue to make a difference to the lives of animals.

Special Events
Occasionally the Home takes part in special events, to promote our National Pet Register (free identification tags), microchipping and our work for animals. We occasionally require volunteers to help out on these special days. If you are interested you need to;

  • Be willing to work weekends when most of these events take place.
  • Be willing to travel on occasion outside the metropolitan area.
  • Have an ability to communicate with a variety of different people in a professional manner.
  • A love of dogs and cats – this is what people will want to talk to you about!
  • A bright, cheery and helpful manner.
  • Ability to cope under pressure as events can be very crowded and busy.
  • Ability to cope with some physical hard work, setting up, packing up and being on your feet all day.

Corporate Volunteer Days
The Lost Dogs’ Home occasionally hosts individual and teams of volunteers from companies who each year allocate a day of paid leave for their staff to volunteer for a not for profit organisation like the Home. These days are always very rewarding for the volunteer team and good fun! For groups, it often means getting outdoors, getting your hands dirty and doing such jobs as gardening, maintenance, exercising dogs awaiting adoption and some administration work.

The Lost Dogs’ Home hosts corporate volunteer groups at our North Melbourne and Cranbourne sites in Victoria. We can only take a limited number of groups each year and it is dependent upon the amount of work and maintenance needed to be done.
