Give A Dog A Home

Give A Dog A Home is a television, radio and internet initiative to give abandoned animals a loving home. The Lost Dogs’ Home would like to thank Mike Larkan and SP Creative Media for their involvement in this program.

You can visit the Give A Dog A Home website at www.giveadogahome.com.au to view the featured animals from The Lost Dogs’ Home.

These animals have already undergone an assessment by The Lost Dogs’ Home veterinary staff on their:
* Health
* Age
* Behaviour and Temperament

These animals are therefore suitable to be rehomed into a family environment which may have other pets. Please contact The Lost Dogs’ Home on (03) 9329 2755 for any special needs for the specific animal you are interested in.

Adoption Price:
* Pups: $270 (6 months of age and under)
* Adults: $255 (over 6 months of age)
Prices include desexing, worming, first vaccination, microchip and heartworm test.

How can I adopt a pet?
You must be the first caller to The Lost Dogs’ Home on (03) 9329 2755 at 9:00am on the Saturday morning following the animal adoption feature segment on Channel Ten’s Weather Report with Mike Larkan. The Lost Dogs’ Home will place the dog on hold for the first suitable caller. Don’t forget if you miss out on the animal you are calling about there may be other equally suitable dogs (or cats) available for adoption.

When can I collect the pet?
The animals advertised on the Give A Dog A Home web site and weather segment on Friday evenings are available to collect on the next day (i.e. Saturday between 9:00am - 12:00pm). Other animals in our adoption pens are also available for sale on the Saturday.

Before you adopt a pet, have you considered “The Golden Rules of Responsible Dog Ownership”?

* Choose the right dog to suit your needs.
* Provide your dog with the appropriate level of socialisation with humans and other animals particularly between the ages of 6 and 16 weeks old. Give the dog a broad range of experiences so that they will develop a well-rounded temperament.
* Provide a cosy dry sleeping area.
* Feed an adequate balanced diet.
* Supply clean fresh water at all times.
* Provide the dog with plenty of exercise and allow regular family contact.
* Take your dog to dog obedience classes.
* Ensure that the dog can be identified at all times by means of council registration (at three months of age) & the fixing of a registration tag to the collar. The owner’s details can also be inscribed onto the dog’s collar.
* Provide adequate veterinary health care for your dog particularly via vaccinations, intestinal parasite & heartworm, flea and tick control.
* Dogs should be confined to the owner’s property so that they cannot escape, especially at night.
* Train your dog so that it is not a nuisance (eg. persistent barking) or dangerous (eg. attacking other animals or people).
* Ensure that your dog is adequately cared for during holidays, preferably by a reputable boarding kennel.
* Obey relevant state and local laws regarding dog ownership eg. Your dog must be under effective control at all times when outside the home. When your dog defaecates in a public place you must collect & correctly dispose of the dog’s droppings.
* Be considerate of neighbours and the public regarding the ownership and activities of your dog.
