Lucky he found his way home!
When Lucky the border collie went missing from his home near Shepparton last year the Nethersole family feared the worst. But true to his name, Lucky bounced back and last Friday he was reunited with his relieved family after an incredible six months on the run.
“Just when we’d given up hope we got the call from The Lost Dogs’ Home,” delighted owner Ros Nethersole said. “Our oldest daughter was in tears. It was an amazing moment to realise that the dog you’d lost is about to come home after all that time.”
Ros said that when Lucky went missing, the family searched far and wide. “This is a small community, but no-one had seen him and he didn’t turn up by the side of the road. It was a mystery”.
While she is not sure how Lucky made his way from their three-acre orchard all the way to Melbourne, Ros knows how he was tracked back home: “We made sure when we bought him that he was microchipped. So when he landed at The Lost Dogs’ Home, they scanned him and called us with the good news.”
Ros’ husband Tim collected Lucky from our North Melbourne headquarters next day and drove the energetic 12-month old home. “It was a fairly stressful drive home. Lucky was jumping all over the car with excitement and when he turned into our place he had to stop half way down the track and let him out,” says Ros. Lucky was home and he knew it! “He just bolted down the driveway to greet us all.”
“He’s a beautiful dog with a great nature. He’s fantastic with the kids and of course they love him.” And now he has a new family member to play with – after Christmas with still no sign of Lucky, the Nethersoles gave in and bought a Labrador puppy. “Now Lucky has a new playmate, and they’re both getting on together well,” says Ros.
She has a simple message to all dog owners: “Make sure you get your pet microchipped. It’s the law, and that’s for a very good reason.”
“We don’t want any other family to go through what we’ve had to go through, especially when a simple procedure like microchipping can prevent a whole lot of pain for you and your dog.”
You can get your pet microchipped at The Lost Dogs’ Home Veterinary Clinic.
