About the Lost Dogs' Home

Our Mission

To serve the community and enhance the welfare of dogs and cats by alleviating animal suffering and reducing the number of lost, injured and unwanted animals.

We will fulfill this mission by providing, in a quality controlled and certified (ISO accredited) environment. We provide:

  • Animal shelters
  • Animal management services
  • Veterinary services
  • Pet registration and identification services

We will further fulfill this mission by education of the public and advocacy of policy at all Government levels.

Founded in 1910, The Lost Dogs' Home is today Australia's largest animal shelter. We offer the community a wide variety of animal welfare services.

  • Animal Management Services for local governments throughout Australia
  • Shelter and adoption service for cats and dogs
  • The National Pet Register - free pet registration and identification
  • Acceptance of unwanted pets for rehousing where possible
  • Veterinary clinic for the general public
  • Trapping and collection service for stray and feral cats
  • Lost and found information service
  • Dog hydrobathing service
  • 24-hour 7-day a week ambulance service
  • A broad range of animal control services
  • Boarding kennels and cattery
  • Puppy preschool training programme
  • School talks on responsible pet ownership
  • Training in animal control

In 2006, The Lost Dogs' Home at Gracie Street, North Melbourne rescued more than 11,000 dogs and 9,000 cats!

They were rescued from the streets of Melbourne and surrounding suburbs. They were saved from being hit by cars, attacked by other animals, or from simply starving to death.
